About

The story of Buoy Tags began the way all products do, with an idea. As a longtime Apple user, I was frustrated with the confusion surrounding the cables. I had some knowledge of creating a product, but knew I couldn't do it alone and hadn't found the right partnership. Then I stumbled upon a blog detailing a product launch from conception to market and read it that evening in a single sitting. The writer was around my age and had created an Apple related product. I decided to reach out.

After a cautious, but friendly conversation, the idea was shared and a dialogue had begun. There was some enthusiasm for banding together on Buoy Tags, but the problem was, Matt had his hands full with his other company. We ended the conversation on a positive note, but as it happened, the idea itself sort of pushed the company to start. Late night that same week, Matt texted, "Okay, somebody just stole my earbuds again. I'm in."

One year later, Matt, Alex and I have our first Buoy Tags ready to share with the world.

Team Bio

Early Buoy Tags Prototype Erin Strater, CEO

Erin graduated from Pratt Institute with a background in the arts and a degree in film. She studied on analog equipment, but was on the cusp. By '99 it was clear all the Bolex's and 16mm 8-plate flatbeds were going to give way to the digital rush. Therein, she was forced to look computers in the face.

Thankfully Macs were there to make that unwanted transition a lot more friendly. Erin has since been working in the film and television industry, while dabbling in a handful of music and entrepreneurial projects. She's called Brooklyn, Hollywood and Las Vegas home along the way.

Matthew Vroom, CTO

After several short careers as a comic artist, illustrator, tradeshow designer, web designer and a defense contractor, Matt quit his day job to launch his first consumer products company in '08. Two years later he debuted Henge Docks, the first comprehensive docking station solution for Apple notebook computers.

He majored in Industrial Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in '05. Matt completed his MBA at SMU COX in '11 where he won the business plan competition two years in a row (the two years after Alex).

Alex Bagden, CFO

Before taking the entrepreneurial route, Alex worked at a private equity firm named glendonTodd Capital. Previous to glenddonTodd, Alex got his MBA from SMU COX where he won the business plan competition two years in a row (the two years before Matt) and received the Texas Business Hall of Fame scholarship for his work as an entrepreneur.

Alex has always had a passion for physics and teaching, so after graduating from UVA with a Masters in Education and a BS in Physics, he was placed at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST). TJHSST has been consistently ranked the best high school in the country by US News and World Report. Since leaving TJHSST, Alex has continued teaching through SMU COX where he taught finance and Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Excel classes.
